Nigerian TikToker Peller has hit back at critics questioning his decision to marry at a young age.
The social media personality said age should not be the only measure used when judging a marriage decision.
During a recent TikTok live session, Peller argued that financial conditions often influence when parents expect their children to marry.
“Let me tell you something for all of you saying he’s too young to get married. Let me tell you something, the reason your parents lie to you to get to a certain age before you get married, let me tell you the reason behind it it’s poverty. I swear to Almighty God.”
According to Peller, parents often want their children to reach a certain age before marriage.
He said this is because they expect them to become financially stable and start earning enough money.
“They keep telling you to get to a certain age because they know you’d have started making money.” Peller said.
The TikToker also questioned why critics focused more on his age than his financial position and feelings.
“You all keep saying, how old are we? Are you counting the age or net worth or how much I love her?”
Peller said genuine love should also be considered when people make decisions about marriage.
“If you love someone, show it to them.”
He further compared his situation with older generations who married in their 30s and 40s.
According to him, some of those marriages happened later because the couples lacked money when they were younger.
“Our parents that got married in their 30s and 40s, it’s because they didn’t have money then. That’s why. It’s poverty,” he added.
While age remains a major consideration for many families, Peller believes financial ability and genuine love also matter.
