The Nigeria Police Force has extradited a wanted suspect to the United Kingdom.
The case involves Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi, who was handed over to UK authorities to face charges linked to murder and drug trafficking.
Moreover, the development highlights how law enforcement agencies are increasingly working across borders. The extradition process was completed under legal supervision and international agreement.
The Nigeria Police Force, through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, coordinated the operation. It was confirmed that the suspect was wanted by UK authorities over serious criminal allegations.
According to reports, the United Kingdom had earlier submitted a formal request in September 2024. The request sought assistance in locating, arresting, and extraditing the suspect.
Furthermore, he was accused of involvement in the murder of Joshua Boadu on 18 June 2018. It was alleged that he fled to Nigeria after the incident to avoid arrest.
In addition, he was also linked to the supply of crack cocaine between October 2017 and March 2018 in the United Kingdom.
The suspect was eventually arrested on 23 January 2025 by INTERPOL operatives in Abuja. Following his arrest, extradition proceedings were immediately initiated.
Meanwhile, the case was heard at the Federal High Court in Lagos under Suit No. FHC/L/CS/416/2025.
On 16 February 2026, Justice A.O. Faji approved the extradition request. The decision was made under the Extradition Act, Cap E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
Therefore, the legal framework enabled the formal transfer of the suspect to UK authorities. The process was completed after a court-issued surrender warrant was executed.
On 14 April 2026, the fugitive was officially handed over at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. UK law enforcement officials took custody for further prosecution.
Moreover, the Nigeria Police Force emphasized its commitment to international collaboration. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed this position.
He stated, “the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening international police cooperation and ensuring that Nigeria does not serve as a safe haven for fugitives.”
In addition, officials noted that such cooperation helps strengthen global justice systems.
Meanwhile, authorities have assured that similar operations will continue when required.
