The Nigeria Police Force has paid N2.3 billion to families of officers who died while serving the country.
The payment was made on Thursday, September 3, 2026, during an event led by IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
A total of 2,971 beneficiaries and next of kin received cheques worth N2,317,177,094.
The police compensation for fallen officers covers insurance claims from 2017 to 2025.
It also includes funds recovered from insurance companies after years of incomplete payments.
The Force said all outstanding claims covered by the payment have now been settled.
Addressing the families, Disu said the money was not simply an act of sympathy.
Instead, he described it as the fulfilment of the Force’s responsibility to families who lost their loved ones.
Many beneficiaries had lost spouses, parents or children who left home for police duty.
The IGP acknowledged that financial support could never replace the loved ones they lost.
However, he said the payment would provide practical help while showing that their sacrifices remain remembered.
The IGP also ordered the Force Insurance Unit to improve awareness across police commands.
This will help officers and their families understand their insurance rights and claim process.
ACP Lydia Ameh also reaffirmed the unit’s commitment to making claims faster and easier.
The Force said the sacrifices of the 2,971 officers will not be forgotten.
