FCT Police Order Mental Health Tests for Officers Amid Misconduct Concerns

A new directive from the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has placed officers under fresh scrutiny, as mandatory mental health checks are set to begin across the force.

The move comes amid growing concerns over discipline and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.

The order for mental health screening was issued by Commissioner of Police Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi during an emergency meeting.

The meeting involved Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units.

However, the directive is not only about health checks. It is also part of a broader effort to address misconduct and restore public trust in policing.

Sanusi warned officers against actions that could damage the image of the force.

Moreover, senior officers have been instructed to return to their commands and brief their teams immediately. Compliance reports are also expected to be submitted without delay.

In addition, a new accountability measure has been introduced within the Command. The Commissioner announced a vicarious liability policy for senior officers.

This means supervisors will be held responsible for misconduct committed by officers under their watch.

Meanwhile, the exercise is scheduled to begin on May 4, 2026. The process will start with junior officers before extending to other ranks.

Furthermore, the assessment will be handled by the Command’s Medical Director, ACP (Dr.) Ifayase Olabanji Akinola. The Police Counseling Unit will also play a key role in the exercise.

The screening is expected to evaluate emotional stability, decision-making, and overall mental fitness.

In addition, residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with authorities. The Command, through spokesperson Josephine Adeh, encouraged the public to report suspicious activities promptly.

Meanwhile, security agencies are expected to monitor the implementation closely. The outcome of the exercise could shape future reforms within the police force.
