A sudden attack along the Lagos–Benin Expressway has left many in shock, as gunmen ambushed a commercial bus and abducted passengers.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the attack happened on April 18, 2026, around 6:00 p.m. The targeted vehicle belonged to GUO Transport Company and was identified with registration number FA 280 YJ.
Police reports indicate that the attackers opened fire on the moving bus during the incident. As a result, the driver was killed on the spot.
At the time of the attack, five people were said to be on board the vehicle. However, the situation quickly escalated as some passengers were forcefully taken away.
One female passenger who sustained gunshot wounds was rescued by officers who responded to the scene. She was immediately taken to a hospital, where she is “receiving treatment and responding positively.”
Meanwhile, three other passengers were reportedly dragged into a nearby forest by the attackers.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate intensification of rescue efforts.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed all adjoining divisions along the Ore–Benin axis and boundary forests to embark on intensive bush combing operations to rescue the victims and arrest the perpetrators,” the statement said.
Furthermore, operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit have been mobilised to support ongoing efforts.
These combined efforts are aimed at increasing the chances of locating the abducted victims quickly. Meanwhile, the surrounding forests are being thoroughly searched.
The police also confirmed that the driver’s body has been deposited in a hospital mortuary. Moreover, the affected vehicle has been secured as part of the ongoing investigation.
Earlier reports from eyewitnesses described the attack as chaotic and frightening. One witness said, “the kidnappers shot and killed the driver. They also took passengers into the bush.”
However, the police have reassured the public that efforts are being intensified to resolve the situation.
“The Command remains resolute and will not relent until the victims are safely rescued and the criminals brought to justice,” the statement added.
In addition, residents have been urged to support the operation by sharing useful information.
