A development has emerged from Delta State after a police officer was dismissed over the fatal shooting of a young man.
The incident, which has drawn widespread attention, is now being treated as a serious case of misconduct within the Nigeria Police Force.
The situation has raised fresh concerns about police accountability in Nigeria.
According to an official press briefing, the victim, 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, was involved in an incident on April 26, 2026.
He had reportedly received a parcel and attempted to send it to another location. However, the parcel was discovered to contain a weapon and ammunition.
Eyewitnesses reportedly carried out a citizen’s arrest before contacting the police. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after and took custody of the suspect.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, confirmed the details in a statement. He said, “At that point, rather than follow established police rules of engagement and standard operational procedures, ASP Nuhu shot and killed the unarmed, already-apprehended suspect.”
Furthermore, the police made it clear that such actions are unacceptable. The statement stressed, “No criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extra-judicial action.”
Following the incident, an investigation was immediately ordered. It was conducted by the Police Monitoring Unit to ensure transparency.
The officers involved were accused of misconduct and abuse of office. Therefore, disciplinary measures were taken without delay. ASP Nuhu and three others have since been arrested and detained.
Moreover, their dismissal from the force has been confirmed. The Police Service Commission reviewed and approved the decision.
Authorities have stated that the matter will be handled in court. The Attorney General’s office is expected to oversee the legal process.
The police also noted that some individuals linked to the case are still being sought. Efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest them.
The police extended condolences to the victim’s family. They also reassured the public of their commitment to justice.
