A routine flight turned into a tragedy on Tuesday night when Joshua Baer, the founder and CEO of Capital Factory, lost his life in a devastating aircraft accident near Laredo, Texas.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the technology and startup community. Baer, widely known for helping entrepreneurs build successful businesses, was the only person killed when a private jet crashed onto a highway while attempting an emergency landing.
According to authorities, the aircraft was travelling from Los Cabos, Mexico, to Austin when mechanical problems were reported. However, before the jet could safely reach the runway, disaster struck. The aircraft crashed near Laredo International Airport shortly before 10 p.m.
The plane crash occurred after the NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude reportedly experienced technical difficulties during flight. Authorities said the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers while approaching the airport.
Meanwhile, the plane struck a light pole before breaking apart and bursting into flames. A moving vehicle was also hit during the crash, leaving one person injured.
Five other passengers aboard the aircraft survived and were taken to a hospital for treatment. Fortunately, officials said their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
In addition, several first responders and police officers were injured while helping rescue passengers from the burning wreckage.
Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino praised the bravery displayed during the emergency response.
“There were police officers and firefighters who put themselves in harm’s way and risked their own lives to reach the aircraft and rescue passengers.”
Videos from the scene showed emergency personnel and bystanders rushing toward the crash site. As flames engulfed parts of the wreckage, survivors were pulled to safety.
Baer’s death was later confirmed by Capital Factory, the Austin-based startup accelerator he helped build into one of Texas’ most influential technology organisations.
In a statement, the company said:
“It is with profound sadness that Capital Factory announces the tragic passing of our Co-Founder and CEO, Joshua Baer.”

For more than two decades, Baer played a major role in supporting entrepreneurs across Texas. Moreover, he helped connect startup founders with investors, mentors, and business partners.
Capital Factory President Bryan Chambers described the late executive as a leader whose impact stretched far beyond the technology sector.
“Josh was a fearless leader, a brilliant partner, and a dear friend to so many of us.”
Furthermore, Chambers assured partners and stakeholders that the organisation would continue operating despite the loss.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have already begun examining the crash site.
According to aviation experts, several issues could have contributed to the emergency situation. These may include engine problems, fuel system failures, electrical faults, or maintenance-related concerns.
Therefore, investigators are expected to examine flight records, maintenance documents, crew training files, and cockpit recordings.
Meanwhile, family members, colleagues, and members of the startup community continue to mourn a businessman whose influence helped shape modern entrepreneurship in Texas.
