Woman Jailed for Dumping Refuse in Lagos Drain

A 53-year-old woman has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse into a Lagos drainage channel.

Nelly Monday was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, during rainfall.

Her arrest came after she was allegedly caught disposing of waste inside a drain.

The Lagos waste disposal arrest was confirmed by the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA.

Monday was later taken before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, she pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted by the court.

The agency said the court subsequently sentenced her to one month in prison.

The statement read, “Nelly Monday, 53, who was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, for dumping in the drains during the rain has been convicted of the offence.

“She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.”

LAWMA warned residents against dumping refuse in drainage channels or other unauthorised places.

The agency said such acts are environmental offences punishable under Lagos State law.

It also warned that enforcement against offenders will continue across the state.

“The Authority will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.

“Residents are urged to dispose of their waste responsibly and through approved channels.”

LAWMA urged residents to use approved waste disposal channels across the state.

The authority also encouraged Lagos residents to take environmental rules seriously.
