New details have surfaced in the controversial Mene Ogidi death case after police arrested two suspects connected to a firearm allegedly moved from Bayelsa to Delta through a commercial transport service.
The arrests were made as public outrage continued to grow over the killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi, popularly known as “Mene Ogidi,” who was allegedly shot by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.
According to sources close to the investigation, the suspects were transferred to the Effurun Area Command on Wednesday night.
The incident has stunned many residents because Ogidi was reportedly only handling the parcel for delivery when he was intercepted by police officers.
A source familiar with the matter disclosed that one of the arrested suspects allegedly arranged the shipment of the firearm from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
“It’s confirmed. Two suspects were brought in Wednesday night. They were arrested by mechanical intelligence,” the source said.
“One of them is the person who sent the gun through a transport line from Yenagoa to Effurun while the identity of the second person has not been revealed,” the source added.
Investigators also suspect the second individual may have transported the package from Bayelsa to Delta State.
Meanwhile, reports indicated that Ogidi picked up the parcel intending to deliver it to its owner in Sapele before tragedy struck.
He was allegedly shot by ASP Nuhu Usman during the operation. Witnesses claimed other officers were present at the scene.
However, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
In another related development, the Delta State Police Command addressed a separate viral video involving a shooting incident around Ogbeilo area of Ogbeogonogo Market in Asaba.
The Command denied allegations that its officers were responsible for the shooting captured in the video.
According to a statement released by the Command, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, ordered the Anti-Cultism Unit to launch a detailed investigation into the incident.
“It’s pertinent to state that there is no verifiable fact to state that it was the Police, as his friend, who was taken away by the gunmen, is not detained in any of the command detention facilities,” the statement read.
Police also disclosed that the victim, identified as “Aboy,” survived the shooting and is receiving medical treatment.
In addition, preliminary findings reportedly linked the victim to cult-related activities in the state.
Authorities claimed he had previously been shot during another cult-related clash four years ago.
Meanwhile, the Command urged members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
