The proposed State Police system will not replace the Nigeria Police Force, IGP Olatunji Disu has said.
Disu gave the assurance during his official visit to the Niger State Police Command in Minna.
His comments come as the Senate-backed plan to establish State Police continues to attract national attention.
The IGP said the new system would work alongside the existing police structure.
He explained that the police had reviewed different State Police models before choosing one for Nigeria.
According to Disu, the selected model was designed to address concerns raised about coordination and accountability.
He stressed that the proposed State Police system would not weaken the responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force.
Disu also linked his visit to the ongoing operation to rescue abducted worshippers in Niger State.
He said security teams were working to secure the victims’ release as quickly as possible.
The effort follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to intensify operations against threats in the state.
Meanwhile, Niger State Commissioner of Police Adamu Abdullahi Elleman welcomed the IGP’s visit.
Elleman described the visit as timely and assured Disu of the command’s full support.
He said officers remained committed to protecting residents and maintaining security across Niger State.
For now, Disu maintains that the proposed system will complement rather than replace the Nigeria Police Force.
