NPF Unveils Stronger Complaints Unit to Tackle Extortion and Abuse

The Nigeria Police Force has moved to strengthen public trust with a renewed push for accountability nationwide.

In a development many Nigerians did not expect, the Force has expanded awareness around its Police Complaints Response Unit, also known as the CRU.

The unit is designed to allow citizens report police misconduct directly without fear or delay.

The announcement was made during an emergency conference held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre in Abuja. The meeting involved Commissioners of Police and members of the media.

Speaking during the gathering, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, said the Police Complaints Response Unit remains active every day of the week.

He explained that Nigerians can use the platform to report extortion, abuse of power, human rights violations, and other misconduct involving officers.

According to him, the goal is to improve transparency and rebuild confidence in the police system.

“The Complaints Response Unit remains fully operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing members of the public with a direct platform to report cases of misconduct, abuse of office, extortion, human rights violations, and other unethical behaviour involving police personnel,” he said.

The Police Complaints Response Unit has increasingly become a major topic among Nigerians online.

Many citizens have repeatedly demanded safer and easier ways to report wrongdoing by security personnel.

The IGP also appealed to Nigerians to use the complaint channels responsibly. In addition, he noted that public cooperation is necessary for building a more professional police institution.

“He further encouraged Nigerians to make use of the available complaint channels responsibly, stressing that public cooperation is essential to building a more professional, transparent, and people-centered Police institution.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force assured citizens that every report received through the CRU would be handled confidentially.

Furthermore, police authorities said the reforms are part of wider efforts aimed at improving institutional integrity.

Many Nigerians have often raised concerns about police misconduct over the years.

The Police Complaints Response Unit is expected to play a bigger role in restoring confidence in law enforcement.

The statement was signed by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7, 2026.
