What first appeared to be a frightening kidnapping case in Lagos has taken a turn after police uncovered what they described as a carefully planned deception.
A scrap iron dealer allegedly staged his own abduction and attempted to create panic after losing his employer’s money to fraudsters.
The case has drawn attention because it involved a ransom demand of N1.5 million.
The incident also highlights how criminals and suspects are increasingly exploiting fears surrounding insecurity and kidnapping across Nigeria.
The fake kidnapping plot was uncovered by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command after an investigation into the reported disappearance of a scrap dealer identified as Abdullahi.
According to police, the suspect allegedly joined forces with two panel beaters to create a false kidnapping scenario. The plan reportedly involved recording a video that would convince his employer that he had been abducted by criminals.
The case began on May 19, 2026, when one Abubakar reported to the police that his brother had gone missing. As investigators launched a search operation, a disturbing video surfaced online.
The footage reportedly showed Abdullahi being beaten with planks by unidentified individuals. In the video, the supposed kidnappers threatened to kill him unless a ransom of N1.5 million was paid by his employer.
Initially, the development was treated as a genuine kidnapping case. Therefore, detectives intensified efforts to locate the victim and identify those behind the act.
However, investigators soon noticed several inconsistencies. Moreover, the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction began to raise suspicion among members of the investigative team.
Speaking on the matter, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, explained how the case unfolded.
According to him, “Upon careful analysis of the video and subsequent investigation, detectives discovered several inconsistencies.”
He further stated, “The suspect was subjected to further interrogation and eventually confessed that the kidnapping was staged.”

Police said the suspect later admitted that the fake kidnapping plot was arranged to distract his employer from the disappearance of N490,000 that had been entrusted to him for business purposes.
According to information obtained during the investigation, Abdullahi allegedly lost the money to fraudsters.
Faced with the fear of explaining the loss, he reportedly became desperate and sought an alternative way out of the situation.
Furthermore, police disclosed that the suspect confessed to working with accomplices who are currently on the run. Efforts are now being made to locate and arrest the remaining suspects.
Meanwhile, investigators recovered the N490,000 during the course of the investigation. This development provided further evidence as authorities worked to establish the full details of the case.
In addition, detectives visited the workshop where the kidnapping video was allegedly recorded. The visit was carried out to gather more evidence and strengthen the ongoing investigation.
The incident has generated public discussion because it comes at a time when many communities are battling real kidnapping threats.
Police have assured residents that investigations will continue until every person linked to the alleged crime is brought to justice.
