A major decision by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has drawn national attention as concerns over insecurity continue to grow across the country.
CAN has declared June 14, 2026, as Black Sunday to honor victims of terrorism, kidnappings, and violent attacks. The announcement comes amid fresh concerns over the safety of communities and the increasing number of families affected by insecurity.
The Christian body also unveiled a three-day prayer programme scheduled for June 12 to June 14. The initiative is aimed at seeking divine intervention while drawing attention to the urgent need for stronger security measures nationwide.
The decision was announced after the 2026 National Church Denominational Leadership Summit. Church leaders expressed deep concern over the continued loss of lives and the growing fear among citizens.
According to CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the security challenges facing the country require more than prayers alone. While faith remains important, he stressed that practical and immediate government action is equally necessary.
The initiative is expected to serve as both a memorial event and a call for urgent reforms in the nation’s security structure.
Archbishop Okoh urged authorities to take stronger steps to address the crisis. Furthermore, he called on the Federal Government to consider declaring a state of emergency on insecurity.
He also renewed calls for the establishment of state police. According to him, decentralizing security operations could improve response times and help security agencies tackle threats more effectively.

Moreover, the CAN leader emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities.
The church body also demanded the release of kidnapped victims still being held by criminal groups across the country. In addition, it called for justice for families who have lost loved ones to violent attacks.
Meanwhile, many Nigerians continue to express concern about the impact of insecurity on education, agriculture, business activities, and daily life.
The upcoming prayer programme is expected to bring together churches and Christian organizations across Nigeria. Participants will pray for peace, national unity, and the safety of citizens.
While many citizens support prayer initiatives, there is also increasing demand for stronger action against criminal groups responsible for attacks across different regions.
