Lagos Cracks Down on Street Beggars, 45 Arrested in Fresh Sweep

An enforcement operation by the Lagos State Government has led to the arrest of 45 suspected street beggars across key parts of the state.

The operation targeted some of Lagos’ busiest areas, including Oshodi, Agege, and CMS. Among those arrested were adults, teenagers, and children found engaging in street begging.

The latest action comes as authorities intensify efforts to improve safety, reduce environmental violations, and maintain order in public spaces across the state.

The development was disclosed on Wednesday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, through his official X account.

According to the commissioner, enforcement officers carried out coordinated operations in several locations known for heavy human traffic.

He stated, “Earlier today, in a separate enforcement operation, our team apprehended 22 beggars at Oshodi and Agege, comprising adults and a few teenagers.”

The commissioner further revealed that another operation was conducted at CMS.

According to him, “Additionally, 14 adults and 9 children were apprehended at CMS.”

Meanwhile, officials explained that the exercise forms part of a broader campaign aimed at restoring order across the state.

Furthermore, the government noted that similar operations are currently underway in other locations.

Wahab disclosed that clearance activities are ongoing at Admiralty Way in Lekki and Addo Road in Ajah.

These efforts are expected to continue in the coming weeks as authorities seek to address environmental concerns and improve the appearance of public spaces.

In addition, the government believes that maintaining clean and organized surroundings contributes to economic growth and enhances residents’ quality of life.

The campaign also aligns with the state’s ongoing enforcement of environmental regulations.

However, the latest arrests are only a small part of a much larger enforcement drive.

Earlier this year, Wahab revealed that thousands of offenders had been apprehended during various operations conducted across Lagos.

According to figures released by the commissioner, no fewer than 10,634 offenders were arrested within one year.

Among them were individuals accused of crossing highways illegally, street trading, environmental violations, cart-pushing, and waste-related offences.

Moreover, authorities disclosed that 5,715 people were arrested for unsafe highway crossing.

Another 3,886 individuals were apprehended for different environmental and public order offences.

Furthermore, 102 people were arrested for open defecation, while 931 others faced allegations linked to waste management violations.

Officials insist the enforcement exercises are not designed to punish vulnerable residents. Instead, they are intended to promote public order and ensure compliance with existing regulations.

Meanwhile, residents have been encouraged to support government efforts by obeying environmental laws and using designated public facilities.
