Abuja Police Rescue Four After Deadly Kidnap Attack in Mpape

A dramatic rescue operation by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has led to the safe recovery of four residents abducted by suspected kidnappers in Mpape, Abuja.

The successful operation followed an intense gun battle with the criminals, who eventually abandoned their captives and fled into a nearby forest.

However, the operation also ended on a tragic note after one resident, identified simply as Mr. Babangida, died from gunshot injuries sustained during the attack. Another victim who was shot in the leg is currently receiving treatment and is responding well, according to the police.

The rescue has been welcomed by residents, especially as security agencies continue to battle kidnapping across the Federal Capital Territory.

Meanwhile, the search for the fleeing suspects has been intensified, with police assuring the public that the criminals will be brought to justice.

According to the FCT Police Command, the incident happened around 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, when heavily armed kidnappers invaded the Yellow House area of Mpape.

The attackers reportedly shot two residents before abducting four others. The victims were then forced through the Jikoko Hills toward the Ushafa Forest.

Following a distress call, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, immediately ordered a coordinated rescue mission.

The operation involved officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, personnel from the Katampe and Mpape Police Divisions, as well as operatives of the 24 Police Mobile Force Squadron.

Furthermore, security teams tracked the kidnappers throughout the night using intelligence and ground surveillance.

The rescue mission continued until the early hours of Friday, July 10, when officers finally caught up with the suspects.

The statement said, “On sighting the advancing operatives, the kidnappers opened fire, engaging the Police team in a fierce exchange of gunfire.”

A heavy exchange of gunfire followed. However, the police successfully overpowered the criminals.

Consequently, the kidnappers abandoned the four hostages before escaping into the surrounding forest to avoid arrest.

The rescued victims were safely evacuated from the forest without injuries and have since been reunited with their families.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing as security operatives continue searching for the fleeing gang members.

The police also confirmed that one of the two injured residents later died despite receiving medical care.

Mr. Babangida was unable to survive the injuries sustained during the attack.

However, the second victim remains hospitalised and is reportedly recovering steadily after suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

Commissioner of Police Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi reaffirmed the Command’s determination to tackle kidnapping and violent crime throughout the Federal Capital Territory.

Furthermore, he assured residents that everyone connected to the attack would be identified, arrested and prosecuted.

The Commissioner also urged members of the public to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements.

Residents can contact the FCT Police Command through its emergency numbers: 08032003913 or 08028940883.

In addition, the police encouraged residents to report suspicious persons or criminal activities to the nearest police station without delay.

Although one life was tragically lost, the successful rescue of the four hostages has provided hope that coordinated security operations can continue to weaken criminal groups operating around Abuja.

The Command also extended its condolences to the family of Mr. Babangida while assuring the public that efforts to restore safety across the FCT will continue.
