Panic broke out at IMAX Cinemas in Lekki, Lagos, after a machete-wielding man reportedly attacked the premises.
The Friday night incident left two people dead, according to the Lagos State Police Command.
The IMAX Cinema attack in Lekki reportedly started when security guards stopped the man from entering the facility.
Eyewitnesses claimed the suspect became violent after being denied access to the cinema.
Police said the suspect allegedly stabbed one security guard to death during the incident.
Another security personnel was also reportedly injured during the attack. Lagos police spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed that two people died during the incident.
“Two people have been confirmed dead,” Adebisi said.
She added that the suspect was later mobbed and died during the incident. Police said the man appeared to be destitute and may have been under the influence of drugs.
However, investigators are still working to establish the exact sequence of events.
The Chief Security Officer of the cinema has also been taken into police custody.
According to the police, officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the cinema premises.
The footage is expected to help investigators establish what happened and identify anyone else involved.
Police have not yet released the identities of the deceased. The condition of the injured security guard has also not been disclosed.
Authorities said investigations are continuing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
