Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has declared war on illegal policing. He has banned the activities of Hisbah in the state.
Hisbah is an Islamic religious police group. The governor says its actions have crossed the line.
This Plateau Hisbah ban comes after growing complaints from residents. Many accused the group of harassment and intimidation.

The governor’s press aide, Gyang Bere, confirmed the directive on Sunday. He said Mutfwang ordered security agencies to act fast.
Security forces were told to stop the group immediately. Their activities were reportedly centered in parts of Jos North.
Residents had raised concerns about extortion and unfair treatment. Some claimed the group made rules without any legal backing.
Bere said the governor warned members of the group directly. Anyone who continues risks arrest and prosecution under Nigerian law.
Mutfwang stood firm on his reason for the Plateau Hisbah ban. He insists no group can act above the law.

“No individual or group has the authority to appoint itself the government of Plateau State. The responsibility for enforcing the law belongs to duly constituted authorities acting within the law,” Mutfwang said.
The governor also ordered a deeper probe into the matter. Security agencies must now identify anyone linked to the group’s operations.
This includes people who may be funding or supporting it. Bere clarified that the order is not targeted at any faith or community.
“The Governor wishes to make clear that this directive is not directed at any religion, ethnic group or community. Plateau State remains home to people of diverse faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds, all of whom are entitled to equal protection under the law,” he said.
The governor thanked residents who reported the group’s actions. He assured the public that credible security concerns would always be taken seriously.
