Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, has stepped up efforts to secure stronger financial support for the Nigeria Police Force.
The police chief made the appeal during a strategic meeting with the Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, in Abuja.
The meeting focused on the urgent release of approved police funds needed to strengthen nationwide security operations and prepare for the upcoming governorship elections scheduled for 2026.
The development comes at a time when concerns over insecurity, kidnapping, bandit attacks, and election safety continue to dominate public discussions in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General stressed that improved funding remains vital for the police to respond effectively to rising security threats.
According to him, the Force requires stronger financial backing to improve logistics, intelligence gathering, personnel welfare, and operational readiness across different states.
Furthermore, Disu explained that security agencies would play a major role in protecting voters, election officials, and public infrastructure during the polls.
He warned that inadequate resources could weaken the ability of officers to respond quickly to emergencies and other threats.

The IGP also highlighted the increasing pressure on police personnel due to persistent attacks on communities and critical national assets.
Moreover, he noted that proactive policing strategies require stable and timely financial support from the Federal Government.
Speaking during the engagement, Disu maintained that operational efficiency depends heavily on consistent funding.
According to him, the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to strengthening professionalism and improving public safety nationwide.
Responding to the concerns, Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Ogunjimi, reportedly assured the police leadership of the government’s support.
“The role of the Nigeria Police Force in addressing the nation’s security challenges is enormous and requires adequate support to enable the Force discharge its responsibilities effectively and professionally,” Ogunjimi stated.
In addition, the Accountant-General urged continuous engagement between police authorities and the Federal Ministry of Finance to ensure faster release of approved allocations.
He warned that delays in funding could negatively affect major security operations across the country.
However, despite the financial concerns, IGP Disu reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and democratic institutions.
