Lagos Set To Launch State-Owned Driver’s Licence Scheme

Lagos State is preparing to introduce its own driver’s licence system.

The new plan, which is expected to begin within weeks, could change how drivers obtain licences in the state.

Moreover, officials say the initiative will reduce delays and improve traffic management across Lagos.

The announcement was made during a press briefing in Ikeja by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

According to him, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to approve the rollout of the project very soon.

Once approved, motorists will reportedly have two options. They can either obtain the regular federal driver’s licence or apply for the new Lagos-issued licence.

Osiyemi explained that the initiative was introduced to address long waiting periods often experienced by applicants seeking driver’s licences.

Meanwhile, the commissioner revealed that authorities processed 56,876 driver’s licences during the recent review period.

The figure included 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals completed in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency.

In addition, 1,158 international driving permits were processed during the same period.

The state government believes the new system could ease pressure on existing federal licensing channels.

However, some motorists are already raising questions about possible differences between the state-issued licence and the federal version.

Others are also waiting for more information regarding pricing, validity, and nationwide acceptance of the proposed Lagos licence.

Meanwhile, the state government also shared updates on several rail transport projects currently under development.

Osiyemi disclosed that the second phase of the Blue Line rail project connecting Mile 2 to Okokomaiko should be completed in the first quarter of 2027.

According to him, full commercial operations are expected after construction is completed.

The commissioner further revealed that the first phase of the Blue Line transported about 3.5 million passengers in 2025 alone.

Furthermore, Lagos State has reportedly acquired 24 additional train coaches for the Red Line corridor.

Authorities also confirmed that work continues on the proposed 68-kilometre Green Line rail project.

The Green Line is expected to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo.

Therefore, many residents are closely watching how the government plans to implement the policy in the coming weeks.

Although full details have not yet been released.
