Police Bust Fake Security Group in Rivers, Arrest Five Suspects

Fear and confusion spread across parts of Rivers State after police uncovered an illegal security outfit allegedly operating as a fake Civilian Joint Taskforce in Tai Local Government Area.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the arrest of five suspects during a raid carried out in Sakpenwa.

However, the discovery has raised fresh concerns about the growing presence of illegal armed groups disguising themselves as community security outfits.

According to police authorities, the suspects included three women and two men identified as Precious Mene, Blessing Felix, Barine Gaviga, Joy Ndornyie, and Muhammed Ibrahim.

Investigators said the group was allegedly operating without government approval while presenting itself as a recognised security body.

Moreover, police officials stressed that no organisation known as the Civilian Joint Taskforce is officially approved to operate in Rivers State.

During the operation, security officers reportedly stormed the hideout after receiving intelligence about suspicious activities in the area.

The raid led to the recovery of three locally fabricated pump-action rifles believed to have been used by the suspects.

According to the police, the suspects were operating “under the guise of providing security services.”

The command warned residents against joining or supporting unauthorised armed groups across the state.

Furthermore, police authorities reminded the public that civilians are prohibited from carrying firearms without proper legal approval.

Meanwhile, residents expressed surprise over the discovery, especially because the suspects reportedly operated openly within the community.

Some locals said they initially believed the group was part of a recognised security structure protecting residents from crime.

However, police investigations later revealed otherwise.

In addition, authorities said more investigations are ongoing to uncover whether other illegal security operations exist within Rivers State.

The command also warned that anyone found operating armed groups outside the law would face prosecution.

They noted that while communities often seek protection from crime, illegal armed groups can create more security problems if left unchecked.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command assured residents that efforts are being intensified to track illegal weapons and dismantle unauthorised groups.
