A major security operation during the Eid celebration period has led to the recovery of weapons and other items believed to be linked to criminal activities in parts of Edo State.
Operatives of the Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Edo State Security Corps carried out a coordinated raid across forests and nearby communities in Ekpoma. The operation was aimed at flushing out suspected criminals hiding in remote locations and disrupting activities linked to kidnapping and violent crimes.
The operation comes at a time when many residents were focused on Eid celebrations. However, security agencies intensified efforts to ensure public safety and prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of the festive period.
According to information made available by security authorities, the Ekpoma security operation focused on several forest areas believed to have been used as hideouts by suspected kidnappers and other criminal groups.
During the exercise, security personnel reportedly combed through thick bushes and remote locations. Consequently, several suspects were said to have fled upon sighting the approaching operatives.
Although no arrests were immediately announced, important items were recovered during the raid.
Authorities disclosed that two long-barrel firearms were recovered from the suspected hideouts. In addition, mobile phones, identity cards, knives, and other suspicious materials were also found during the operation.
The recovered items have been taken into custody and are expected to be examined further by investigators.
Meanwhile, residents in some affected communities expressed relief over the operation. Many have repeatedly raised concerns about insecurity and kidnapping incidents within forest areas around the region.
The latest operation is being viewed as a significant step toward reducing threats within the area. Moreover, the collaboration between multiple security agencies highlighted a unified effort against criminal activities.
While several suspects reportedly escaped, security officials believe the operation disrupted their activities and reduced their ability to operate freely.
In addition, intelligence gathered during the exercise is expected to support future operations across other parts of Edo State.
