A self-proclaimed native doctor and his wife have been dragged before a Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti over an alleged fraud case involving more than N1 billion.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said the suspects, Olorunbukunmi Taiwo and his wife, Awolegan Omolola Omotola, were arraigned on allegations linked to obtaining money under false pretence and retaining suspected proceeds of crime.
According to the anti-graft agency, the case began after a widow from Delta State reported that she was allegedly convinced to finance a road construction contract. The woman reportedly believed the project had been awarded through the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC).
EFCC officials stated that investigations were launched after a petition was submitted by Anazia Colina Kenechukwu, who operates a private school in Delta State.
She reportedly claimed that Taiwo approached her with assurances that he had secured a road construction contract.
She allegedly invested substantial funds into the project. However, investigators later discovered that large sums were paid into the suspect’s bank account during the transaction period.
Furthermore, the commission revealed that about N1.98 billion was allegedly traced to Taiwo’s Access Bank account. Investigators believe the funds were connected to the disputed arrangement.
Meanwhile, further inquiries reportedly uncovered properties allegedly linked to the proceeds of the transaction. These assets include a hospitality business known as Town Tavern Lounge along Ikere Road in Ado-Ekiti.
In addition, a four-bedroom bungalow located within Florence Court, Irewolede Estate, was also identified during the investigation.

The EFCC maintained that the properties were allegedly acquired with funds connected to the ongoing case. Consequently, an interim forfeiture order was earlier secured against the assets on May 25, 2026.
Court documents indicate that the defendants are facing a six-count charge. The charges reportedly border on obtaining money under false pretence and the retention of suspected proceeds of crime.
However, the allegations remain before the court, and the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Meanwhile, anti-corruption agencies have continued to encourage Nigerians to verify investment opportunities before committing funds.
