IGP Disu Breaks Silence on Police Reforms, Reveals Key Role for Traditional Institutions

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has moved to address growing concerns among police personnel over ongoing policing reforms, assuring officers that their careers, welfare, and benefits remain protected despite discussions surrounding the proposed creation of State Police.

The reassurance came during a working visit to Jigawa State on Monday.

During the visit, the police chief also made a call for stronger cooperation between traditional rulers and security agencies, stressing that lasting peace and security cannot be achieved without community involvement.

The visit included a courtesy meeting with Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi, participation in the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Dutse, and an engagement with officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command.

Speaking before traditional rulers, the Inspector-General praised the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council for its efforts in promoting peace and national unity.

He specifically acknowledged the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

According to the police chief, traditional institutions continue to play an important role in maintaining stability across communities.

He noted that traditional rulers contribute significantly through intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, community engagement, and early warning systems.

Moreover, he stressed that stronger partnerships between traditional leaders and security agencies would help tackle insecurity more effectively.

The IGP explained that local leaders often possess valuable information that can assist security agencies in preventing crime before it occurs.

Furthermore, he emphasized that collaboration remains essential for sustainable development across Northern Nigeria and the country at large.

During his meeting with Governor Umar Namadi, the police chief reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to working closely with state governments and critical stakeholders.

He stated that stronger cooperation would support public safety and improve community policing initiatives.

Meanwhile, the most anticipated part of the visit came during his address to officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command.

Many personnel have expressed concerns over discussions regarding the establishment of State Police.

However, the Inspector-General assured officers that there was no reason for alarm.

He explained that the proposed reforms are designed to strengthen Nigeria’s overall security framework.

Importantly, he emphasized that the objective is not to weaken the Nigeria Police Force.

Instead, the reforms are expected to improve security operations while maintaining a strong national policing institution.

The police chief reassured officers that their welfare would remain protected throughout any reform process.

In addition, he stated that career progression, pensions, and other legitimate benefits would not be affected.

He highlighted efforts aimed at enhancing personnel welfare, strengthening capacity building, and improving service delivery nationwide.

He warned that the Force would continue to maintain a strict position against corruption, extortion, abuse of office, and misconduct.
