The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully deployed 198 troops to The Gambia in a
peacekeeping operation, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to regional security and stability across West Africa.
The deployment further highlights the country’s growing military strength and its leading role in supporting peace missions under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The Nigerian Air Force deployment was carried out using the service’s C-130H transport aircraft. Moreover, the mission ensured the smooth rotation of troops serving under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), replacing Nigerian Company 10 (NIGCOY 10) with Nigerian Company 11 (NIGCOY 11).
The operation was completed through two carefully planned flights between May 26 and May 30, 2026. In addition, operational equipment and personal belongings of the deployed personnel were transported without disruption, allowing responsibilities to be transferred seamlessly.
According to the Nigerian Air Force, the successful mission demonstrates the service’s expanding ability to move troops and equipment quickly beyond Nigeria’s borders.
The Nigerian Air Force deployment also comes at a time when security challenges continue to evolve across parts of West Africa. Therefore, rapid military response has become increasingly important in maintaining peace and preventing instability within the region.

The Air Force explained that the deployment reinforces its position as a reliable air mobility partner for ECOWAS peace support operations.
Moreover, sustained investment in aircraft, logistics, and operational readiness continues to improve the country’s ability to respond to regional security concerns.
Speaking on the operation, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, stressed the importance of strategic air power in addressing modern security threats.
“Air power delivers its greatest effect when it provides the speed, reach, and flexibility to respond wherever national and regional security demands,” he said.
The Air Chief added that every successful deployment improves Nigeria’s ability to protect its national interests while supporting peace beyond its borders.
The service noted that the troop rotation aligns with the vision of building a highly motivated, professional, and combat-ready force.
In addition, the goal remains to deliver decisive air power during joint operations alongside other security agencies whenever necessary.
The mission was also described as another step toward strengthening military cooperation among ECOWAS member states. Furthermore, it supports ongoing efforts to promote collective security across the sub-region.
However, Nigeria has remained one of the leading contributors to regional peacekeeping operations for many years.
