Nigerian Medical Graduate Loses Life Following Russian Strike in Ukraine

A tragic twist has emerged from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war after a 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate reportedly died from injuries she sustained during a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

However, despite weeks of intensive medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries, according to her university.

The victim, Nnani Adaobi Marian, was a graduate of Kharkiv National Medical University. Reports indicated that she was critically injured during a guided aerial bomb attack that struck Kharkiv on June 29.

According to available information, Russian forces launched aerial attacks on several locations, including the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv.

The strikes reportedly claimed multiple lives across the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions, while many others were injured.

Meanwhile, Marian was said to have been travelling with her close friend, Fatima Huseynova, when the attack occurred.

The two young women were reportedly heading out for a graduation photoshoot ahead of their graduation ceremony scheduled for the following day.

Sadly, Fatima lost her life at the scene, while Marian sustained life-threatening injuries.

Although she was initially treated by doctors in Kharkiv, she was later moved to Germany to receive advanced medical care.

However, despite every effort made by medical specialists in both countries, her condition reportedly did not improve.

Confirming the sad development, Kharkiv National Medical University released an emotional statement mourning the loss of its student.

The university said:

“As a result of enemy shelling, Nnani Adaobi Marian was seriously injured. Doctors fought for her life until the last moment: first in Kharkiv, and later in Germany. Everyone sympathised, helped, and hoped for her recovery, but, unfortunately, despite all the efforts of the doctors, they could not save her.”

Furthermore, the institution described Marian as one of its outstanding students.

According to the university, she enrolled in 2020 and consistently demonstrated academic excellence throughout her studies.

In addition, she actively participated in international training programmes designed to strengthen her medical knowledge and practical experience.

The university revealed that Marian completed an internship at the University of Cambridge in 2024.

Moreover, she later attended another international programme at Biruni University in 2025, where she further developed her clinical skills and participated in scientific research.

Paying tribute to her character, the university stated:

“Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others.”

Meanwhile, reports indicated that one of the aerial bombs exploded on a roadway in Kharkiv’s Kholodnohirskyi district.

The explosion reportedly injured at least 12 other people in addition to the casualties already recorded.

Furthermore, it highlights the devastating human cost of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which continues to affect civilians from different countries.
