Breaking Religious Barriers: Nigerian Muslim Father Says Faith Won’t Decide Who Marries His Daughter

A Nigerian Muslim man has sparked conversations on social media after publicly declaring that he would welcome Christian and traditional worshippers who wish to marry his daughter, provided they possess good character and a decent means of livelihood.

The statement has drawn attention across different religious and social groups. Moreover, it has reignited discussions about interfaith marriage in Nigeria.

Rather than placing religion at the centre of his decision, Taoheed Abdulwasiu Mustapha said he values humanity above religious differences. According to him, moral values, family background and responsible living are more important qualities for anyone seeking his daughter’s hand in marriage.

Abdulwasiu made the remarks in a Facebook post shared on Friday, June 26, 2026.

In the post, he openly invited interested suitors from different religious backgrounds to approach his family.

“If you’re a Christian or a traditional believer and you’re interested in asking for my daughter’s hand in marriage, you’re welcome to come forward,” he wrote.

He further explained the qualities he expects from anyone hoping to marry his daughter.

“As long as you come from a good family, have good character, and have a decent means of livelihood, you have my respect. I will support you.”

His comments have since generated thousands of reactions online. Furthermore, many Nigerians praised his message of tolerance, while others expressed differing opinions based on their religious beliefs.

According to Abdulwasiu, his faith teaches him to respect people regardless of their beliefs.

“I’m a Muslim, but humanity is at the core of my values. I refuse to embrace any interpretation of religion that teaches me to hate, despise, or attack people simply because they follow a different faith.”

The statement has become one of the most discussed topics on social media, especially among users debating religious freedom and family values.

Meanwhile, Abdulwasiu also criticized attitudes that encourage hostility toward people of different faiths.

“Saudi Arabia eats and dine with Israel and America….What’s your own problem…? Nonsense.”

He continued by stressing the principle that guides his personal beliefs.

“To me, humanity comes before religious differences.”

In addition, he maintained that criticism would not force him to abandon his convictions.

“If my way of life doesn’t sit well with you, that’s your choice. Go and hug the transformer.”

“But no amount of criticism or threat to life will change my belief in treating people with dignity and respect. Africa, Wake Up.”

Marriage experts have also observed that relationships involving people from different faiths require understanding, communication and respect for each other’s beliefs.

However, Nigeria remains one of the world’s most religiously diverse countries.
