A  case of alleged deception has emerged in Edo State after police arrested a 48-year-old man accused of staging his own kidnap and demanding a N4 million ransom from his relatives.

The suspect, identified as Lucky Alabi, was arrested alongside his alleged accomplice, Taiye Enahoro, after police uncovered what authorities described as a carefully planned scheme designed to extort money from unsuspecting family members.

Moreover, the Edo State Police Command said the alleged plot was uncovered through intelligence gathering and detailed investigations.

According to the police, the incident began on June 23, 2026, when Enahoro allegedly contacted Alabi’s relatives several times by telephone.

The caller reportedly informed family members that Alabi had been kidnapped and demanded N4 million before he would be released.

However, police investigations later revealed that the alleged kidnap story had been fabricated.

According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, operatives attached to the Igarra Division acted swiftly after receiving credible intelligence concerning the suspicious ransom demand.

The investigation eventually led officers to both suspects.

According to the police, “Acting on credible intelligence and through diligent investigative efforts, police operatives uncovered the deception and successfully arrested both suspects.”

Furthermore, investigators said both men have admitted to playing different roles in the alleged fake kidnap plot.

Police explained that the suspects would face prosecution after investigations are completed.

According to the statement, “The suspects have confessed to their respective roles in the staged kidnapping and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation.”

The Edo fake kidnap case has attracted attention because it differs from the usual kidnapping incidents reported across the country.

Instead of criminals abducting victims, investigators alleged that the supposed victim actively participated in planning the incident.

In addition, such cases can delay emergency responses to genuine kidnapping incidents requiring urgent intervention.

The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, also used the opportunity to warn residents against engaging in criminal deception.

According to the police, “The Edo State Police Command warns members of the public against engaging in any form of criminal deception, including staging kidnappings to extort money from unsuspecting relatives.”

Furthermore, the command reaffirmed its determination to investigate every reported kidnapping thoroughly, regardless of the circumstances.

Authorities stressed that individuals found abusing public trust through false criminal reports would face the full weight of the law.

The police also encouraged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities through the appropriate security channels.

Meanwhile, investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

Additional findings may emerge as detectives continue reviewing evidence connected to the case.

Therefore, law enforcement agencies have urged Nigerians to verify suspicious information while cooperating fully with investigators whenever security concerns arise.
