Asaba Police Scandal: Officers Face Trial Over POS Extortion

A shocking incident has emerged from Delta State, where a motorist was allegedly extorted inside a police station using a POS machine.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on January 13, 2026, at ‘C’ Division in Asaba.

However, the Police Force leadership responded quickly after reviewing a viral video.

According to an official statement, “On 13 January 2026 at ‘C’ Division Asaba, officers collected money from a motorist using a POS machine inside the station. This behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

The case has now been escalated, and disciplinary actions have already been initiated.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered immediate action. Two officers have been identified and are currently facing internal disciplinary proceedings.

The statement confirmed, “The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered an immediate summary trial for Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim. Orderly room proceedings are in progress.”

Furthermore, authorities have assured the public that transparency will be maintained throughout the process.

In addition, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reiterated a strict policy against misconduct. He emphasized that such actions damage public trust and will not be tolerated.

The statement clearly noted, “Extortion, the use of POS machines, or any electronic payment platforms within police formations, is strictly prohibited.”

It further stressed that no officer has the authority to demand or receive money from civilians under any circumstance. This directive is part of broader efforts to reform the system.

Meanwhile, the role of the public in exposing the incident has been acknowledged. Authorities expressed appreciation to those who recorded and shared the video.

“We thank those who recorded and shared the incident. Your vigilance promotes accountability,” the statement added.

Moreover, the case is being viewed as a warning to other officers across the country.
