The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has received a major honour from the Nigeria Judo Federation during a high-level meeting in Abuja.
Moreover, the meeting revealed plans that could introduce martial arts training across police commands nationwide.
During the visit to the Force Headquarters, the Nigeria Judo Federation officially conferred the title of Life Patron on the IGP. The recognition was presented by the federation’s president, Dr. Musa Olakunle Oshodi.
The meeting focused on improving police fitness and strengthening ties between the police and the sporting community. In addition, discussions were held around the proposed 2026 IGP Open Judo Championship.
The championship is expected to involve different police commands across Nigeria.
The police sports development initiative became one of the major talking points after details of the meeting emerged online.
According to the federation, the appointment of Disu as the 23rd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police represents a significant moment for the sporting community.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General expressed appreciation for the recognition and reaffirmed his commitment to improving officers’ physical strength and discipline.
“The IGP expressed his gratitude for the honor and reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to integrating martial arts and competitive sports into training regimes to boost the professional discipline and physical well-being of personnel nationwide.”
The police sports development plan is also expected to improve teamwork, mental alertness, and endurance among officers. In addition, advocates argue that sporting activities can reduce stress levels within security agencies.
Over the years, concerns have been raised about the physical condition of some police officers. Therefore, the latest partnership with the Nigeria Judo Federation is being viewed as a strategic move.
The proposed 2026 IGP Open Judo Championship could also help discover young talents within the Force.
The visit took place at the Force Headquarters in Abuja and attracted attention from both security and sports communities.
