Tension has risen in northeastern Nigeria after a controversial airstrike reportedly hit a busy market in Jilli.
The incident has shocked many, as early reports suggest high civilian casualties. Moreover, conflicting accounts have made the situation even more unsettling.
The Yobe State Government has defended the operation, insisting it targeted a Boko Haram stronghold. However, eyewitnesses claim that a crowded market was struck instead.
According to emerging reports, over 100 people are feared dead, although no official toll has been confirmed.
Meanwhile, both military authorities and emergency responders are yet to release verified figures.
In its initial response, the government maintained that the strike was part of ongoing counterterrorism operations.
Officials stated that intelligence had identified the location as a gathering point for insurgents.

Therefore, authorities also stressed that the target area lies within neighbouring Borno State.
The region has long been known as a centre of insurgent activity. However, local sources insist the impact was felt in Jilli market, raising serious questions.
“This operation was aimed at a Boko Haram stronghold rather than civilians,” the government stated. The claim, however, has been widely debated as more eyewitness accounts continue to emerge.
Critics also note that similar airstrike incidents have occurred in the past. They warn that repeated errors could weaken trust in security operations.
Furthermore, residents and humanitarian groups have called for an independent investigation into the airstrike.
