Troops Rescue 10 Abducted NECO Candidates, One Missing After ISWAP Attack in Borno

A swift military operation has led to the rescue of 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers who were abducted during a terrorist attack on a school in Borno State. However, one victim remains in captivity as security forces continue search operations.

The rescue followed a coordinated response by troops of Operation HADIN KAI after suspected ISWAP terrorists stormed Lassa Community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area while students were sitting for their NECO examinations.

The operation has renewed hope for families, although the loss of a soldier and a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) member has cast a shadow over the successful mission.

Moreover, the incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of schools in Nigeria’s North-East. Despite sustained military operations against insurgents, attacks on soft civilian targets remain a major security challenge.

According to the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, the attack occurred at about 9 a.m. while candidates of the Technical Secondary School were writing their NECO examinations.

The military immediately launched a large-scale rescue mission. Ground troops were deployed without delay.

In addition, strike aircraft and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI joined the operation.

The combined effort enabled security forces to track the fleeing terrorists toward the Daggu area.

Meanwhile, troops engaged the insurgents in a fierce exchange of gunfire after locating their movement.

The military confirmed that the operation ended with the successful rescue of most of the abducted victims.

According to the statement, “The troops, guided by aerial surveillance, successfully rescued 10 abducted victims unharmed. The rescued candidates and teachers are currently receiving appropriate care and support.”

Furthermore, security forces recovered seven motorcycles believed to have been used by the terrorists during the attack.

The recovered motorcycles reportedly disrupted the escape plans of the fleeing insurgents.

Military authorities also disclosed that several terrorists were neutralised during the encounter.

However, the operation came at a painful cost.

One soldier serving under Operation HADIN KAI lost his life during the rescue mission.

A member of the Civilian Joint Task Force also died while supporting the operation.

The military paid tribute to the fallen personnel.

According to the statement, “Their courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment exemplify the collective resolve of security forces and local volunteers who continue to risk their lives daily to protect innocent citizens and restore peace across the North-East.”

Meanwhile, efforts have intensified to locate and rescue the remaining abducted victim.

Military authorities assured the public that the operation remains active until every victim is safely returned.

In addition, troops have reinforced security around schools and vulnerable communities across the affected areas.

The military explained that the latest attack reflects the growing desperation of terrorist groups facing sustained pressure from ongoing counterterrorism operations.

Consequently, insurgents have increasingly shifted their focus toward attacking unarmed civilians and educational institutions.

The military also pledged to sustain operations aimed at restoring lasting peace throughout the North-East.

Furthermore, residents were encouraged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence.

Authorities also advised members of the public to ignore misinformation and rely only on verified updates regarding ongoing operations.
