The police have launched an investigation into threats and abuse aimed at Premier League referee Michael Oliver, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has confirmed.
The abuse reportedly followed Oliver’s controversial decision to issue a red card during Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday.
Oliver’s decision to send off Myles Lewis-Skelly for a reckless challenge on Matt Doherty was reviewed and upheld by VAR Darren England, who deemed it ‘serious foul play.’
However, the decision sparked outrage among Arsenal fans, with manager Mikel Arteta expressing his dissatisfaction.

“I’m fuming,” Arteta stated, adding that Arsenal would be appealing the decision.
The backlash escalated into threats directed at Oliver and his family, prompting the PGMOL to release a statement condemning the behavior.
“We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Arsenal fixture,” the statement read.

It further emphasized that no official should be subjected to such treatment, describing the attacks as “abhorrent.”
The PGMOL confirmed that the police have been informed and multiple investigations are underway.
“We are supporting Michael, and all those affected, and are determined to tackle this unacceptable behaviour,” the organization stated.
The incident highlights the need for greater respect toward match officials and the importance of maintaining professionalism to foster teamwork and progress in the sport.
