Police Arrest Suspect After Delta Woman Dies Following Alleged Sexual Assault

A content creator based in Asaba, Delta State, has been arrested after the death of a young woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted following a meeting arranged through social media.

The incident has sparked widespread concern across Nigeria, with many calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased. Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has confirmed that a suspect is in custody as detectives continue their investigation.

The case has also renewed conversations about online safety, violence against women, and the importance of reporting alleged sexual offences through the proper legal channels. However, police have urged the public to allow investigations to run their course before reaching conclusions.

The deceased, identified as Favour Agbro from Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, was reportedly invited to Asaba after contacting the suspect over an opportunity to learn how to monetize TikTok and Facebook pages.

According to accounts shared by relatives and circulating on social media, she believed the training would help her build a successful online presence.

It was alleged that after arriving in Asaba, she was taken to a room where she was sexually assaulted against her will.

The allegations have not yet been tested in court, and the suspect has not publicly responded to them.

According to the reports, the young woman contacted her twin sister and mother after the alleged incident.

Her family reportedly sent her transport fare to enable her return home.

The reports further claimed she later sought help but felt discouraged after being told that pursuing the matter would be difficult because the suspect was believed to be influential.

Police have not confirmed those specific claims.

In a chat with LIB, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that an arrest had been made.

He said:

“The suspect has been arrested and is in police custody.”

He further explained that more details would be made available by the Delta State Commissioner of Police as the investigation progresses.

Furthermore, the arrest marks the beginning of the legal process, with investigators expected to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.

In addition, advocacy groups continue to encourage survivors of sexual violence to seek immediate medical care, preserve evidence where possible, and report incidents to the police or recognised support organisations.

Authorities have advised members of the public to verify invitations carefully and inform trusted relatives or friends before travelling to meet individuals known only through social media.
