Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins is taking his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu into youth football.
Martins has announced plans for a football tournament linked to Tinubu’s 2027 campaign.
The former Inter Milan and Newcastle United forward said the event will take place in November.
He disclosed the plan during an interview on TVC on Thursday.
Martins described the event as the “Renewed Hope tournament” and said teams will come from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
He also plans to add two or three more teams to the competition.
“There’s a tournament that I’m doing for His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu that I’m doing for his campaign, the renewal youth tournament, and I’m doing it with, I think, the geopolitical zone, which is six, and I’m adding more two to three teams with it,” Martins said.
The former striker said the Tinubu youth football tournament will also focus on creating opportunities for young Nigerians.
“I think I’m just happy to do it for the president with all his hard work and all that. And that is not just for the president, it’s for the Nigerians and the Nigerian youth as well; how we can help them,” he said.
Martins confirmed that he will personally fund the tournament.
“Yes, I’m doing it in November,” he said when asked if the initiative was self-funded.
The announcement follows his recent support for Seyi Tinubu’s possible future leadership of the NFF.
“I think Seyi Tinubu can be the president of NFF. He’s young and understands what Nigerians want. He’s not the president yet, but he’s making efforts,” Martins said.
The youth football tournament adds a sporting dimension to Martins’ public support ahead of 2027.
