Nigerian singer Segun Johnson has sparked debate with his unusual view of what it means to be a millionaire today.
The entertainer said Nigeria’s rising cost of living has changed the meaning of financial success.
According to him, having millions of naira is no longer enough to meet the modern idea of being a millionaire.
Speaking during a recent conversation, Segun compared today’s financial reality with the past.
He recalled when having N30 million could easily make someone a millionaire in Nigeria.
However, he said the situation has changed significantly in recent years.
“Back then in those days, if you have 30 million, you are actually a millionaire. In this present age, if you don’t have $1 million, you are broke, you are not a millionaire. That’s the truth,” he said.
His comment has drawn attention because of the difference between the naira and dollar value.
Segun argued that people should look beyond the amount displayed in their Nigerian bank accounts.
He specifically addressed people who believe having N100 million automatically places them among millionaires.
“The fact that you have 100 million doesn’t make you a millionaire,” he added.
The singer also used everyday examples to explain his point.
He suggested that someone could appear wealthy within a smaller community without having significant wealth by wider standards.
“But you might be a millionaire among people in Ojota, or probably people in Oworonshoki,” he said.
However, many Nigerians now measure wealth differently because of inflation and changing living costs.
His statement does not provide a formal definition of millionaire status.
Instead, it reflects his personal view of how financial standards have changed.
