Lagos State Unveils Water Transport Plan to Cut Ikorodu-Victoria Island Travel Time

Daily travel in Lagos could soon take a turn as the state prepares to expand its water transport system.

The move is expected to reduce the stressful journey between Ikorodu and Victoria Island to less than 40 minutes, offering commuters a faster alternative to the city’s persistent traffic congestion.

The transformation will be driven by the €410 million Omi Eko, also known as “Water of Lagos,” project. The initiative aims to modernise water transportation by introducing electric ferries.

Officials believe the project will improve mobility, reduce travel stress and support economic activities across the state.

According to details released about the initiative, the government plans to introduce 75 electric ferries by 2030.

These ferries will operate across 15 different routes connecting several parts of Lagos.

Furthermore, commuters travelling from Ikorodu will be able to reach Victoria Island, including the Addax, Sandfill and Maroko axis, in approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

In addition, the electric ferries have been designed to carry as many as 440 passengers during each trip.

The increased passenger capacity is expected to reduce waiting times while improving the overall commuting experience.

Passengers will be able to use the Cowry Card ticketing system across multiple transport services.

The integration will also connect the ferry system with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network and the Lagos Blue Line Rail.

Moreover, it reflects the state’s growing focus on developing cleaner and more sustainable transportation options.

Although the full rollout is expected by 2030, preparations are already shaping expectations for a different commuting experience.
