Thousands of motorists in Lagos will need to adjust their travel plans after the state government announced a temporary closure of the busy Iddo Bridge.
The development is linked to a major phase of the ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction project on the bridge.
The closure, which will affect vehicular movement for several days, is expected to impact commuters traveling through the Ijora and Apapa corridor.
The closure has been scheduled as part of ongoing efforts to improve one of Lagos’ important transport routes. Furthermore, officials have appealed to motorists to remain patient while the work is carried out.
The announcement was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi. According to him, the operation will be supervised in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works as reconstruction activities move into a critical stage.
He explained that the installation of steel beams requires temporary restrictions to ensure public safety. Consequently, the bridge will be inaccessible to vehicles during specific periods.
“The operation is scheduled to take place on June 17, 2026, from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m and on June 21, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
“Consequently, the entire section of Iddo Bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicular movement during the periods stated above to ensure the safe installation of the steel beams on the bridge.
“The closure is part of the traffic management plans put in place to facilitate the launching of steel beams for the ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iddo Bridge by the Federal Ministry of Works (Office of the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos).”
Meanwhile, the project is being viewed as an important step toward improving transportation infrastructure within Lagos. In addition, government officials believe the reconstruction will enhance safety and support smoother traffic movement when completed.

The Bridge closure is expected to affect motorists who frequently use the route to access Apapa, Ijora, and surrounding commercial areas.
Furthermore, traffic management personnel will be deployed to strategic locations to guide road users and reduce congestion. Motorists are also being encouraged to follow traffic directives and cooperate with officials on duty.
The rehabilitation work forms part of broader efforts to upgrade aging infrastructure across Lagos. However, temporary disruptions are likely as construction activities continue.
For many residents, the announcement came as a surprise due to the importance of the bridge to daily transportation and business activities. Nevertheless, authorities insist that the short-term inconvenience will contribute to long-term benefits for road users.
