IGP Disu Urges Community Partnership to Fight Rising Insecurity in Nigeria

Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has called for stronger cooperation between security agencies, communities, and citizens to address the country’s growing security challenges.

The call was made during the Rotary/Rotaract District Joint DISCON AKUGBE’26 held at Cathelea Convention & Event Center.

The IGP explained that modern security threats have expanded beyond traditional crimes.

According to him, issues such as terrorism, cybercrime, cultism, misinformation, and economic sabotage are now major concerns.

Speaking at the event themed “Peace, Security and Sustainable Development: How Rotary Builds Stronger Communities Through Strategic Partnerships,” Disu assured that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to intelligence-led and technology-driven policing.

“The Nigeria Police Force is currently undergoing major transformation through improved intelligence gathering, digital policing, inter-agency collaboration, tactical modernization, operational accountability, and enhanced professionalism across commands and formations,” he stated.

However, he warned that criminals are also becoming more advanced in their methods. Consequently, he emphasized that outdated policing strategies can no longer address today’s security realities.

He further added that trust between the police and the public remains essential for effective law enforcement.

In addition, the IGP highlighted ongoing efforts to tackle kidnapping, armed robbery, cult violence, cybercrime, and attacks on critical infrastructure.

He explained that poverty and lack of opportunity also contribute to insecurity, making community development important in crime prevention.

Furthermore, Disu praised Rotary International and Rotaract for their role in education, youth empowerment, healthcare, and peacebuilding.

He also stressed that “security cannot be sustained through enforcement alone,” noting that collaboration and shared responsibility are necessary for lasting peace.

Meanwhile, participants at the event included Rotary and Rotaract leaders, diplomats, and business stakeholders committed to national development and stability.
