Nigeria and the United States have opened a fresh round of high-level security talks in Washington, D.C. The meeting brings senior officials together to address terrorism and other shared security concerns.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, is among the Nigerian officials attending the talks. The delegation is led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
The discussions are focused on improving counterterrorism cooperation and reviewing progress made by both countries.
They also identify areas where stronger security collaboration is needed.
The United States-Nigeria security meeting is being led on the American side by Allison Hooker, Under-Secretary of State. Nigeria’s delegation also includes Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Defence Christopher Musa and Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo are also taking part.
Their presence highlights the broad focus of the discussions. Furthermore, both sides are expected to discuss the protection of fundamental freedoms. Religious freedom, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are also part of the wider engagement.
The working group was created after the United States redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC).
The platform provides a formal channel for both governments to discuss terrorism, human rights and religious freedom. The first meeting of the group was held in Abuja in January. However, the latest Washington meeting is expected to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
A bilateral defence meeting between Nigeria and the United States is also scheduled. That engagement will further strengthen the countries’ long-standing security relationship.
The United States-Nigeria security meeting comes as both nations seek stronger responses to terrorism. Moreover, officials are expected to review existing measures and agree on practical next steps.
The talks are also aimed at improving coordination between security agencies. Therefore, the outcome could shape future cooperation against terrorism and other security threats.
Nigeria and the United States have maintained a longstanding security partnership. The latest discussions provide another opportunity to address shared challenges and strengthen that relationship.
