Travellers between Nigeria and Canada may soon have a faster option after both countries expanded their aviation agreement.
The new deal could change how Nigerians visit Canada for school, business, tourism and family reunions.
For thousands of Nigerian students and travellers, the agreement may also mean fewer connections and easier journeys.
Nigeria and Canada have signed an expanded air transport agreement allowing direct scheduled flights between both countries.
The agreement was signed in Abuja by officials from Nigeria’s Ministry of Aviation and Canada.
It expands the existing Nigeria-Canada Air Transport Agreement and allows several airlines from both countries to operate scheduled services.
Under the new arrangement, designated airlines can operate up to 14 passenger flights weekly.
They can also operate up to 10 weekly cargo flights between both countries.
The agreement further gives cargo operators Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights under specified conditions.
This allows airlines to carry freight between two foreign countries when the journey starts or ends in their home country.
The Federal Government said the new framework could improve air connectivity and reduce travel pressure on passengers.
It could also lower travel time, improve convenience and support stronger business links between Nigeria and Canada.
More than 25,000 Nigerians currently hold valid Canadian study permits, making the agreement significant for education-related travel.
The deal could also benefit tourists, investors, business travellers and families travelling between the two countries.
A statement by Tunde Moshood, media adviser to the aviation minister, said the agreement followed technical discussions.
The Nigerian delegation was led by Mohammed Ahmed Tijjani, director of air transport management.
He represented Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo during the signing ceremony.
Canada was represented by Shendra Melia, its chief negotiator for global affairs.
The ministry said the Nigeria-Canada Air Transport Agreement dates back to negotiations held in 2014.
It was initially designed as a code-share arrangement and was formally signed in March 2025.
The latest agreement therefore represents the biggest expansion of the framework since its original negotiation.
The ministry had earlier announced renewed talks on direct flight operations between both countries.
Those discussions were aimed at resolving outstanding issues delaying the launch of direct air services.
The latest agreement now provides a clearer framework for airlines interested in operating the route.
Officials believe improved air links could deepen trade, tourism, education and investment between Nigeria and Canada.
The development also creates new opportunities for airlines and cargo operators seeking access to both markets.
For travellers, the biggest question now is when the first direct flights will actually begin.
The agreement opens the door, but airlines and aviation authorities must still complete the required operational steps.
