Owning a home could become easier for eligible Nigerians through the National Housing Fund mortgage scheme.
The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria offers contributors access to up to ₦50 million at an interest rate of 6%.
The mortgage can help eligible contributors buy, build, improve or renovate residential properties. However, the ₦50 million limit does not mean every applicant will receive that amount.
The actual loan depends on income, repayment ability, property value and other lending conditions.
To qualify, applicants must be Nigerian citizens aged 18 or above. They must also be registered National Housing Fund contributors.
Applicants must have made continuous NHF contributions for at least six months. They must also show a stable source of income.
Self-employed applicants are expected to provide proof of regular earnings. The mortgage can finance up to 90% of the property’s cost or value.
The NHF mortgage loan has a maximum repayment period of 30 years. Applicants should therefore assess their income before choosing a property or loan amount.
Applications are processed through FMBN-accredited Primary Mortgage Banks and approved mortgage loan originators.
Applicants may need proof of contributions, income records, property documents and valuation reports. Additional documents may also be required during the approval process.
FMBN also provides digital channels for contributors to check their NHF accounts.
Contributors can review their payment history before starting a mortgage application.

The scheme is different from a cash grant. Borrowers are required to repay the mortgage under agreed terms.
Prospective homeowners should also beware of fraudsters demanding money to secure an FMBN loan. Applications should only be handled through official FMBN channels or accredited mortgage institutions.
For Nigerians planning to own a home, the NHF mortgage loan offers another route to housing finance. Checking eligibility and affordability should be the first step before applying.
