Workers at some of the businesses were seen in distress as firefighters battled the flames.

Only one fire service truck was reportedly deployed as efforts continued to control the spreading fire.

Police spokesperson Eitokpah Akata confirmed the incident and said no casualty had been recorded.

He said police officers were also deployed around the mall to prevent people from stealing from affected businesses.

According to Akata, the likely cause could be an electrical fault. However, investigations are still ongoing to establish what started the blaze.

“We don’t have a probable cause for now, but it is most likely linked to an electrical fault,” he said.

The SPAR Mall Calabar fire has left several traders facing significant losses as authorities continue assessing the damage.

Security personnel have maintained a presence around the affected area while emergency responders work to secure the location.

Police said further updates would be provided as investigations continue.

Authorities are expected to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the losses.
