A fraud scheme targeting Nigerians has finally been exposed, police say a syndicate had been impersonating JAMB registrar Segun Aina.
One suspect is already in custody but the police are still hunting for the man believed to be behind the entire operation.
This JAMB registrar impersonation scheme reportedly ran for months undetected it only came to light after a formal complaint was filed.
Police spokesperson Ani Iniedu confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, he named the suspect in custody as Nwogba Arinze.
The main suspect, Nnabuife Nwekpa, remains on the run, however, Authorities say efforts to track him down are still ongoing.
According to the police, the case began after Aina filed a petition on August 10. He accused the syndicate of impersonation, identity theft, and fraud.
IGP Tunji Disu approved a full investigation into the matter. The probe initially stretched into Nasarawa and Katsina states.
However, the trail took an unexpected turn. Suspects found there turned out to be victims, not criminals.
The real fraudsters had built fake social media accounts using Aina’s identity, using these pages to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.
This JAMB registrar impersonation case eventually led investigators to Anambra State. That’s where police tracked down and arrested Nwogba Arinze.
Arinze had been posing as the registrar’s personal assistant meanwhile Investigators say he used a clever trick to avoid detection.
“Further investigation revealed that Arinze, taken into custody on 27th August, 2026, used the bank account of his deceased nephew, Edeh Chimezie Benedict, to conceal his identity and evade detection,” the statement said.
Police explained how he gained access to that account.
“The suspect had been entrusted with the late nephew’s account details and debit cards to assist with funeral arrangements done on 31st July, 2026,” Iniedu said.
However, the Investigators hopes his cooperation will help capture the remaining suspects soon.
