Nigeria’s policing system has been jolted by a sweeping reform. The newly launched Violent Crime Response Units (VCRU) are set to take over operations previously handled by SWAT teams.
Moreover, Inspector-General of Police, Rilwan Olatunji Disu, made the announcement during an emergency meeting with senior officers.
According to him, the VCRU units will be deployed across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He explained that full responsibility for the conduct and results of these units will be placed on the Commissioners.
“The Nigeria Police Force under my leadership has zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions. Accountability will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” he stated.
In addition, he confirmed that the officer involved has been dismissed. The case has also been forwarded for further legal action.
The IGP also stressed the importance of community policing. He directed Commissioners to engage regularly with local leaders and groups.
