A Delta State police officer has raised fresh concerns about children’s exposure to harmful content on the internet.
The warning followed a case involving a 13-year-old boy who was arrested after allegedly threatening a teenage girl online.
“He was 13 when he was arrested…” the officer said while recalling the case during a recent interview.
According to the officer, the incident happened on December 30, 2025, after the girl’s mother contacted the police.
She reportedly told officers that someone was threatening to share her daughter’s private images online.
Police traced the phone number used for the threats to an address in Sapele, Warri.
Investigators later discovered that the account was allegedly being operated by a 13-year-old boy.
The boy reportedly first claimed that his sister owned the phone before later admitting his involvement.
The officer said the boy had been exposed to adult content after using his father’s phone.
She also said he had access to social media from an early age without enough supervision.
According to her account, the child had been using a phone since he was about five.
The case has renewed concerns about children’s online safety and the need for stronger parental guidance.
The officer questioned how much attention parents pay to what their children watch and do online.
She warned that unrestricted phone and internet access can expose children to harmful influences.
Parents and guardians are therefore encouraged to monitor children’s internet use and teach them about safe online behaviour.
