Four medical doctors and other suspects have been arrested over an alleged kidney trafficking case in Nasarawa State.
The arrests followed a police operation targeting suspected illegal organ deals in Altabalefi, Karu Local Government Area.
Police said the suspects were allegedly involved in recruiting people and linking them with individuals seeking kidney donors.
According to the Force Intelligence Department Special Tactical Squad, Emmanuel Odeh allegedly played a key role in the operation.
The police commander said, “He’s now the one recruiting people, other people to come and sell their k+dney.”
Investigators also alleged that Odeh previously sold his own kidney for N7 million in 2022.
One alleged victim accused Odeh of deceiving him before taking him to Wellington Clinic for the procedure.
“It’s my friend that deceived me. His name is Emmanuel Odeh” he said.
The alleged victim further claimed that money was offered after documents were signed.
“After we signed, then later in the night, around 10 to 11, they now come and give us money in dollar,” he alleged.
However, a renal transplant consultant denied claims that the procedures lacked consent.
“For the k+dney transplant, usually we will tell them first and foremost we will that you can get your relatives if you can convince any of your relatives to come in for this transplant, that will be ideal.”
The consultant said the facility had carried out five transplant cases since January.
The police said investigations are continuing, with the suspects expected to face prosecution.
However, Authorities stressed that organ trafficking is a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
