An immigration directive from Cambodia has triggered concern among African nationals after authorities ordered foreigners without proper status to leave the country before May 31, 2026.
The warning, issued by Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration, stated that anyone who remains in the country illegally after the deadline could face arrest, imprisonment, and heavy financial penalties.
Moreover, the order affects several African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, and Uganda.
According to the official notice released by the Ministry of Interior, a temporary immigration waiver earlier granted to some foreigners will end on May 31, 2026.
Authorities stressed that affected individuals must leave Cambodia immediately after clearing any outstanding immigration fines.
“All foreign nationals whose fines have been cleared must leave Cambodia on or before 31st of May 2026,” the statement read.
Furthermore, Cambodian authorities warned that strict enforcement operations would begin from June 1.

The government said foreigners found remaining illegally in the country after the deadline would be arrested at airports or other locations.
“Any foreign national who enters, remains or is found in Cambodia from 1st of June 2026 will be arrested at the airport or at any location,” the notice stated.
In addition, the government revealed that offenders could face up to two years in prison and an $8,000 fine before deportation.
Authorities also announced plans for nationwide raids targeting undocumented foreigners.
“The Cambodia Police will start arresting any foreigner at any hideout in Cambodia from 1st of June 2026 for overstay and will hand over to the immigration authorities for legal action,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the sudden directive has created uncertainty among many African residents living in Cambodia.
Some social media users described the move as unusually strict, especially given the short notice before enforcement begins.
However, Cambodian authorities insisted that the action is necessary to strengthen immigration control and enforce compliance with national laws.
Furthermore, the government stressed that violations of immigration laws would no longer be tolerated.
Authorities urged all affected foreigners to comply peacefully with the directive to avoid legal consequences.
