A 33-year-old man, Jacob Irewa, has been arrested after allegedly setting his wife on fire in Lokoja, Kogi State.
The incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Oworo Estate, Felele, following a domestic disagreement.
The victim, Berida Irawo, survived the attack and is receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.
Police spokesperson ASP Salisu Afusat confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday.
She said the dispute started after Irawo reportedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes.

Police said she believed the clothes were no longer being used and acted without his permission.
The disagreement reportedly escalated after Irewa allegedly threatened his wife.
According to the police, he later took petrol from his motorcycle and allegedly set her on fire.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission.”
The B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, responded after receiving a report of the incident.
“On Friday, 14th August 2026, at about 2030 hours, the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested,” the statement read.
Police said Irewa admitted to the alleged attack during questioning.
“The suspect, in his statement to the Police, admitted to setting his wife ablaze. The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.”
The case has renewed concerns about domestic violence and the need for peaceful ways to resolve family disputes.
