Kano State: Phone Traders Clash With Chinese Sellers Over Price Undercutting

Phone traders in Kano State have reportedly confronted Chinese nationals over their alleged direct sales of mobile phones to customers at lower prices.

A video circulating on social media shows traders warning the Chinese nationals against continuing their business activities in the market.

The confrontation has sparked debate about competition, customer choice and the challenges facing local phone sellers.

In the video, the traders said they belonged to an association and opposed the alleged sale of phones directly to consumers.

They argued that the lower prices could affect their businesses.

One trader was heard warning the Chinese nationals, saying, “We don’t want to see any of you in this market or even in this area, we don’t want to see you,”.

Another trader also expressed the group’s position, declaring: “We don’t want to see any china person coming to this market and doing business. We have our own organization and our own time.”

The incident comes weeks after some Nigerian public figures criticised Igbo traders who protested against similar business practices involving Chinese nationals in Lagos.

Among those reportedly commenting on the Lagos incident were Lere Olayinka, Dotun and others.

However, they have yet to publicly respond to the reported confrontation in Kano.

The Kano incident has also drawn mixed reactions online as some Nigerians criticised the traders for trying to stop other sellers from operating.

However, the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear.
