Their journey had reportedly begun in Markopoulo, near Athens, before the flight headed towards the popular holiday destination.

The Sifnos helicopter crash happened shortly before the aircraft was expected to land at about 18:15 local time.

A fire broke out after the helicopter went down, prompting firefighters and residents to rush towards the scene.

Sifnos Deputy Mayor Manolis Foundoulakis said the wreckage was almost completely destroyed by the impact and fire.

Residents near the landing area reportedly witnessed the aircraft fall only metres from nearby homes.

Some witnesses also reported hearing a “bizarre engine noise” shortly before the helicopter crashed.

Two victims were reportedly found inside the wreckage, while the third was located nearby.

Firefighters later brought the flames under control as authorities began securing the crash site.

The deaths have shocked the holiday island, which attracts visitors during Greece’s busy summer tourism season.

The Sifnos helicopter crash has also triggered an investigation into what happened during the final moments.

Greek authorities are examining the wreckage and gathering information to establish the cause.
